Calicut: The 40th anniversary ceremonies of the Markaz group of institutions will be held on January 4, 5, 6, 7 at the Markaz campus, Karanthur, Calicut. The conference is organised on the theme of “research for epistemological excellence”. Markaz, a charitable educational institute started in 1978, has become one of the major Muslim educational enterprises in India. In the past four decades, Markaz contributed to the national progress by providing educational opportunities to hundreds of thousands needy, poor and orphan kids across India, mostly through projects which cover the food, shelter and clothing of the latter along with the free education. To achieve the goal of “social empowerment through education”, Markaz runs a group of institutions comprising orphanages, educational centers for disabled, professional colleges, arts and science colleges, educational centers on Islamic philosophy, shareeah and Quran, schools and skill development centers. Currently, 39,000 students study in different campuses of the Markaz across India. Markaz also runs close to 200 institutes in the 22 states of India.
The knowledge city, a new project of the Jamia Markaz, which envisions a knowledge based multipurpose township is the first of its kind project in Kerala. The knowledge city, which is located at Kaithapoyil, 40 kms away from the Calicut city, has a lush green 125 acre campus, where currently a Unani medical college and Markaz law college has started operation. A group of other educational institutions and township will start their operation at knowledge city soon.

Markaz strives to improve the quality of the life of the marginalized sections across India through various sustainable developmental and charitable projects. The sweet water project which provides drinking water to 7218 North Indian villages, monthly scholarships to five thousand orphan kids across India which helps them to study from home, charitable projects in the disaster sites and developmental projects in the coastal areas are many of them. As of now 20 million people directly benefitted from the projects of Markaz across India. In the future plan of Markaz, it aims to stop the brain drain from Kerala as the students from Kerala are highly dependent other states for higher education given the lack of opportunities in their home state. The affiliations of the Markas with different international Universities and academicians will be used to achieve this goal.
1261 students are getting graduated in Islamic Theology, 198 students are awarded graduation in Quran Studies and Hifz and 692 girls are awarded Hadiya certificate in the convocation ceremony of the Markaz Ruby Jubilee.
